NRA Basics of Shooting Courses Overview

The NRA Basics of Shooting courses are intended for all individuals regardless of previous shooting experience or NRA-affiliation. These are the traditional, instructor-led course where you will receive direct instruction from an NRA-certified instructor from beginning to end. The NRA Basics of Shooting courses take place in both a traditional classroom and range environment. These courses will most often be completed over several days with smaller blocks of instruction and a small review before each new session. The courses can occasionally be completed in a single day if the full group and instructor make arrangements to do so prior to the first classroom session.


NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting

Course topics include: gun safety rules, proper operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, ammunition knowledge and selection, pistol selection and storage, shooting fundamentals, pistol inspection and maintenance, marksmanship, and shooting range safety. Additionally, students will complete live fire training and a nationally standardized shooting qualification while on the range with an NRA Certified Instructor. Students will receive the NRA Guide: Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination and receive a course completion certificate bearing the signature of the NRA Secretary and your NRA Certified Instructor.

This course is not designed for nor intended to teach you the legal and situational information required to qualify you for any handgun carry permit. However, the State of Tennessee does recognize successful completion of the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting course as meeting the gun safety education requirement for the Concealed Carry Permit. If you are a 21+ year old Tennessee resident who completes to certification the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting course you are eligible, beginning on January 1, 2020, to apply for a Concealed Carry Permit as amended by Tennessee’s passing of HB 1264. Courses taken prior to January 1, 2020 and within 1 year of applying for a permit are still valid for this purpose. This course does not meet requirements for the new Enhanced Carry Permit defined by HB 1264.

The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting course covers the following five lessons, a minimum length of time needed to cover the material is 8 Hours
Lesson I: Pistol Knowledge and Safe Gun Handling
Lesson II: Ammunition Knowledge and the fundamentals of Pistol Shooting
Lesson III: Shooting Positions and Shooting Qualifications
Lesson IV: Scoring Targets, and Selecting and Maintaining Your Pistol
Lesson V: Continued Opportunities for Skill Development

Please note that we *do not* offer the Blended version of this course listed on the NRA website at this time. We at Pogue Firearm Training feel a full, hands on, approach to your firearm safety education is the most effective way to ingrain a lifelong approach to safe and responsible use of your firearm.


NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting

This course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for the safe and proper use of a shotgun in shooting a moving target. This course is at least 10 hours long and includes classroom and range time learning how to shoot shotguns at moving targets. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; shotgun parts and operation; shotgun shell components; shotgun shell malfunctions; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting at straight away and angled targets; cleaning; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Shotgun Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, take a Basics of Shotgun Shooting Student Examination, and receive a course completion certificate.

The NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting course covers the following five lessons, a minimum length of time needed to cover the material is 10 Hours.
Lesson I: Shotgun Knowledge and Safe Handling
Lesson II: Ammunition Knowledge and the fundamentals of Shotgun Shooting
Lesson III: Firing the First Shots
Lesson IV: Shotgun and Shooting Skill Practical Exercise
Lesson V: Shotgun Games and Activities


NRA Basic Rifle Shooting

This course teaches the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for the safe use of a rifle in target shooting. This course is at least 8 hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot rifles. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; rifle parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest, prone, sitting, standing and kneeling positions; cleaning; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Rifle Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, take a Basics of Rifle Shooting Student Examination, and receive a course completion certificate.

The NRA Basic Rifle Shooting course covers the following five lessons, a minimum length of time needed to cover the material is 8 Hours.
